Gold IRA Rules

Gold IRAs remain IRAs. Contribution, rollover and distribution rules still apply, while precious-metals holdings introduce additional product and custody requirements.

Collectibles rule and exceptions

The IRS generally treats metals and coins as collectibles for individually directed retirement accounts, but Section 408(m) provides exceptions for specified coins and qualifying bullion. Product eligibility therefore needs to be checked before purchase.

Custody matters

The statutory bullion exception refers to qualifying bullion held in the physical possession of a bank or approved non-bank trustee. Be cautious with arrangements that imply you can simply keep IRA-owned metals at home without tax consequences.

Distributions still matter

Traditional IRA owners may eventually face required minimum distributions, and taking possession of IRA property can have tax consequences. Use a qualified tax professional for individual circumstances.
